Verse 1
ततः प्रागुदयात् संध्यामुपास्य मुनिपुङ्गवः ।
अग्निहोत्रं च विधिवत् कृत्वा जप्यं च नित्यशः ॥
Before sunrise, the foremost of sages performed the twilight prayers, duly performed the Agnihotra, and completed his daily recitations.
Verse 2
विश्वामित्रो महातेजा रामं दशरथात्मजम् ।
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं धर्मयुक्तमिदं शुभम् ॥
The greatly radiant Vishvamitra spoke these sweet and auspicious words, consistent with righteousness, to Rama, the son of Dasharatha.
Verse 3
अद्य प्रभृति ते राम तपः स्वाध्यायसंयुतम् ।
विधिवत् समुपाक्रान्तं भविष्यति न संशयः ॥
“O Rama, from today onward your austerities, together with study of the sacred texts, will proceed properly. There is no doubt about this.”
Verse 4
इत्युक्त्वा मुनिशार्दूलो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
रामं च लक्ष्मणं चैव समादिश्य महाबलौ ॥
Having spoken thus, the great sage Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages, instructed the mighty Rama and Lakshmana.
Verse 5
ततः प्रहृष्टवदनौ रामलक्ष्मणलक्षणौ ।
उभौ तौ मुनिशार्दूलं प्रणम्याभ्युपतस्थतुः ॥
Then Rama and Lakshmana, both with joyful faces, bowed to the foremost of sages and stood before him.
Verse 6
ततः प्रहृष्टमनसा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं रामं सत्यपराक्रमम् ॥
Then the great sage Vishvamitra, with a delighted mind, spoke sweet words to Rama, whose valour was true.
Verse 7
गच्छ राम महाबाहो यत्र ते मनसा मतिः ।
कृतार्थोऽसि महाबाहो कार्यं ते समुपस्थितम् ॥
“Go, O mighty-armed Rama, wherever your mind directs you. You are fulfilled, O mighty-armed one; your task has now arisen.”

इत्युक्तो राममादाय लक्ष्मणं च महाबलम् ।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजा प्रस्थितो मुनिपुङ्गवः ॥
Thus addressed, the greatly radiant Vishvamitra, the foremost of sages, set forth taking Rama and the mighty Lakshmana with him.

ततः पन्थानमाश्रित्य गच्छन्तौ रघुनन्दनौ ।
ददृशाते महात्मानं गाधेयं तपसि स्थितम् ॥
Then, following the road, the two descendants of Raghu saw the great-souled son of Gadhi engaged in austerities.

तं दृष्ट्वा रघुशार्दूलो विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् ।
उवाच लक्ष्मणं वीरं रामो राजीवलोचनः ॥
Seeing the great sage Vishvamitra, Rama, the lotus-eyed tiger among the Raghus, spoke to the heroic Lakshmana.

एष धर्मः परो नित्यं तपसा सिद्धिमागतः ।
अस्य शिष्यौ महात्मानौ भविष्यावो न संशयः ॥
“This is the supreme eternal dharma by which one attains perfection through austerity. Without doubt, we shall become disciples of this great-souled sage.”

इत्युक्त्वा तौ महात्मानौ रामलक्ष्मणलक्षणौ ।
विश्वामित्रस्य चरणौ प्रणम्याभ्युपतस्थतुः ॥
Having spoken thus, the two great-souled brothers Rama and Lakshmana bowed at Vishvamitra’s feet and stood before him.

ततः प्रहृष्टो भगवान् विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं रामं दशरथात्मजम् ॥
Then the venerable great sage Vishvamitra, greatly pleased, spoke sweet words to Rama, the son of Dasharatha.

अद्य ते कथयिष्यामि रहस्यं परमाद्भुतम् ।
येन त्वं सर्वशस्त्राणि वेत्स्यसे नात्र संशयः ॥
“Today I shall tell you a most wonderful secret, by which you will learn all the weapons. There is no doubt about this.”

ततो रामो महातेजा लक्ष्मणेन सहानघ ।
शुश्राव वचनं तस्य विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ॥
Then the greatly radiant and sinless Rama, together with Lakshmana, listened to the words of the wise Vishvamitra.

ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
रामं दशरथस्येमं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ॥
Then the greatly radiant great sage Vishvamitra spoke to Rama, the son of Dasharatha and foremost among all wielders of weapons.

शृणु राम महाबाहो शस्त्राणां परमं बलम् ।
येन त्वं सर्वशस्त्राणि वेत्स्यसे नात्र संशयः ॥
“Listen, O mighty-armed Rama, to the supreme power of the weapons. By this you will know all the weapons; there is no doubt about it.”

ददामि ते महाबाहो दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि राघव ।
यैस्त्वं सर्वान् रणे शत्रून् वशमानयितासि ह ॥
“O mighty-armed Raghava, I shall give you divine weapons by which you will bring all your enemies under your control in battle.”

ततो रामो महातेजा विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा दीनमस्त्रग्रामं जगाद ह ॥
Then the greatly radiant Rama bowed his head before the great sage Vishvamitra and humbly addressed him concerning the collection of weapons.
20
कृतार्थोऽस्मि महाबाहो भवता चानुकम्पितः ।
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि मे ब्रह्मन् दातुमर्हसि सुव्रत ॥
“I am fulfilled, O mighty-armed one, and you have shown me your compassion. O Brahman, O righteous one, you should bestow the divine weapons upon me.”

ततो रामाय महते विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
ददौ दिव्यानि शस्त्राणि सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि राघवे ॥
Then the great sage Vishvamitra bestowed upon the great Rama, the Raghava, all the divine weapons and missiles.
22
ततः प्रहृष्टो भगवान् रामो राजीवलोचनः ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा तं तु जग्राहास्त्राणि राघवः ॥
Then the venerable lotus-eyed Rama, delighted, bowed his head before Vishvamitra and received the weapons.

ततो रामस्य राजेन्द्र दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः ।
प्रादुर्बभूवुरव्यग्रं विश्वामित्रस्य शासने ॥
Then, O king, all the divine weapons manifested before Rama without obstruction, in accordance with the command of Vishvamitra.

ततो रामो महातेजा दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः ।
प्रत्यगृह्णाद् यथान्यायं विश्वामित्रस्य शासने ॥
Then the greatly radiant Rama properly received all the divine weapons according to the command of Vishvamitra.
25
ततो रामं महात्मानं विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ॥
Then the great sage Vishvamitra spoke sweet words to the great-souled Rama, the foremost among all wielders of weapons.
इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे चतुःसप्ततितमः सर्गः ।
Thus ends the seventy-fourth Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, the original epic.
