Verse 1
जनकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः ।
विश्वामित्रं पुरस्कृत्य जनकं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥
Hearing the words of Janaka, the venerable sage Vasistha, with Vishvamitra before him, spoke to Janaka.
Verse 2
अव्यक्तप्रभवो ब्रह्मा शाश्वतो नित्य एव च ।
तस्य पुत्रो मरीचिस्तु मरीचेः कश्यपः सुतः ॥
Brahma is the eternal and everlasting source of the unmanifest. His son was Marichi, and Marichi’s son was Kashyapa.
Verse 3
विवस्वान् कश्यपाज्जज्ञे मनुर्वैवस्वतः स्मृतः ।
मनुः प्रजापतिः पूर्वमिक्ष्वाकुश्च मनोः सुतः ॥
Vivasvan was born from Kashyapa, and Manu was known as Vaivasvata. Manu was formerly a Prajapati, and Ikshvaku was his son.
Verse 4
इक्ष्वाकोस्तु सुतः श्रीमान् कुक्षिरित्येव विश्रुतः ।
कुक्षेस्तु पुत्रो विकुक्षिर्बाणः पुत्रस्तु विकुक्षेः ॥
The illustrious son of Ikshvaku was known as Kukshi. Kukshi’s son was Vikukshi, and Vikukshi’s son was Bana.
Verse 5
बाणस्य तु महातेजा ककुत्स्थः पुत्र उच्यते ।
ककुत्स्थस्य च पुत्रोऽभूद् रघुर्येन तु राघवाः ॥
The greatly radiant son of Bana was known as Kakutstha. Kakutstha’s son was Raghu, from whom the descendants of Raghu came to be known as Raghavas.

रघोस्तु पुत्रो राजर्षिः प्रवृद्धः पुरुषादकः ।
कल्माषपादो ह्यभवत् तस्माज्जातस्तु शङ्खणः ॥
Raghu’s son was the royal sage Pravriddha, who became known as Purushadaka. He became Kalmashapada, and from him was born Shankhana.

शङ्खणस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद्ध् ध्रुवसन्धिरिति स्मृतः ।
ध्रुवसन्धेस्तु पुत्रोऽभूत् प्रसेनजिदरिंदमः ॥
Shankhana’s son was known as Dhruvasandhi. His son was Prasenajit, the subduer of enemies.

प्रसेनजितः पुत्रस्तु भरतो नाम नामतः ।
भरतस्य च पुत्रोऽभूदसितो नाम वीर्यवान् ॥
Prasenajit’s son was named Bharata. Bharata’s son was the valiant Asita.

असितस्य तु पुत्रौ द्वौ हैहयास्तालजङ्घमाः ।
तेषां चापि महाबाहुः शत्रुघ्नो नाम वीर्यवान् ॥
Asita had powerful enemies, the Haihayas and Talajanghas. Among them was the mighty and valiant Shatrughna.

शत्रुघ्नस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद् दिलीप इति विश्रुतः ।
दिलीपस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद् भगीरथ इति श्रुतः ॥
Shatrughna’s son was renowned as Dilipa, and Dilipa’s son was known as Bhagiratha.

भगीरथात् ककुत्स्थाश्च भागीरथ इति स्मृताः ।
ककुत्स्थानां तु सर्वेषां पूर्वजः स रघूत्तमः ॥
From Bhagiratha came the descendants known as the Bhagirathas. Among all the Kakutsthas, he was the foremost ancestor.

भगीरथस्य पुत्रोऽभूत् ककुत्स्थ इति विश्रुतः ।
ककुत्स्थस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद् रघुर्नाम महाबलः ॥
Bhagiratha’s son was renowned as Kakutstha, and Kakutstha’s son was the mighty Raghu.

रघोस्तु पुत्रो राजेन्द्रः प्रवृद्धो नाम वीर्यवान् ।
कल्माषपाद इत्येव नाम्ना लोकेषु विश्रुतः ॥
Raghu’s son was the powerful king Pravridha, renowned in the world by the name Kalmashapada.

तस्य पुत्रो महातेजाः शङ्खणो नाम वीर्यवान् ।
शङ्खणस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद् ध्रुवसन्धिररिंदमः ॥
His son was the greatly radiant and valiant Shankhana. Shankhana’s son was the subduer of enemies, Dhruvasandhi.

ध्रुवसन्धेस्तु पुत्रोऽभूत् प्रसेनजिदरिंदमः ।
प्रसेनजित्सुतो नाम भरतो नाम विश्रुतः ॥
Dhruvasandhi’s son was Prasenajit, the subduer of enemies. Prasenajit’s son was renowned by the name Bharata.

भरतस्यापि पुत्रोऽभूदसितो नाम वीर्यवान् ।
असितस्य च पुत्रोऽभूद् ऋतुपर्ण इति स्मृतः ॥
Bharata’s son was the valiant Asita, and Asita’s son was known as Rituparna.

ऋतुपर्णस्य पुत्रोऽभूद् सर्वकामो महाबलः ।
सर्वकामस्य पुत्रस्तु सुदास इति विश्रुतः ॥
Rituparna’s son was Sarvakama, the very powerful. Sarvakama’s son was renowned as Sudasa.

सुदासस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद् सौदास इति विश्रुतः ।
सौदासस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद् अश्मकः नाम वीर्यवान् ॥
Sudasa’s son was renowned as Saudasa, and Saudasa’s son was the valiant Ashmaka.

अश्मकस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूत् मूलकः पुरुषर्षभः ।
मूलकस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद् खट्वाङ्ग इति विश्रुतः ॥
Ashmaka’s son was Mulaka, the bull among men. Mulaka’s son was renowned as Khatvanga.

खट्वाङ्गस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूद् दीर्घबाहुरिति श्रुतः ।
दीर्घबाहोस्तु पुत्रोऽभूद् रघुर्नाम महाबलः ॥
Khatvanga’s son was known as Dirghabahu. Dirghabahu’s son was the mighty Raghu.

रघोस्तु पुत्रोऽभूद् अज इत्येव विश्रुतः ।
अजस्य चाभवद् राजा दशरथ इति श्रुतः ॥
Raghu’s son was renowned as Aja, and Aja’s son was known as King Dasharatha.

दशरथस्य त्विमौ पुत्रौ रामलक्ष्मणसंज्ञितौ ।
भरतो नाम कैकेय्यां शत्रुघ्नश्चापि राघवः ॥
Dasharatha had these two sons, Rama and Lakshmana. Bharata was born of Kaikeyi, and Shatrughna was also a Raghava.

एतेषां वंशजाः सर्वे राजर्षयः सुमहाबलाः ।
इक्ष्वाकूणां कुले जाता महात्मानो महाबलाः ॥
All these descendants were royal sages of great strength, born in the lineage of Ikshvaku and possessing immense power.

इति प्रोक्तो मया वंशो राघवाणां महात्मनाम् ।
मिथिलायां तु राजर्षेः प्रजापतेरनन्तरम् ॥
Thus I have described the lineage of the great-souled Raghavas, O royal sage, following the lineage of the Prajapati of Mithila.

निमिर्नाम महातेजा राजर्षिः सुमहायशाः ।
तस्य पुत्रो मिथिर्नाम जनको यस्य वै पुरा ॥
There was a greatly radiant and highly renowned royal sage named Nimi. His son was named Mithi, who was formerly known as Janaka.

मिथेस्तु पुत्रो जनको जनकादुदवस्थितः ।
उदावसोस्तु पुत्रोऽभून् नन्दिवर्धन इत्युत ॥
Mithi’s son was Janaka, and from Janaka came Udavasu. Udavasu’s son was Nandivardhana.

नन्दिवर्धनपुत्रस्तु सुकेतुर्नाम वीर्यवान् ।
सुकेतोरपि पुत्रोऽभूद् देवरात इति श्रुतः ॥
Nandivardhana’s son was the valiant Suketu, and Suketu’s son was known as Devarata.

देवरातस्य राजर्षेर्बृहद्रथ इति स्मृतः ।
बृहद्रथस्य शूरस्य महावीर्यस्य धीमतः ॥
The son of the royal sage Devarata was known as Brihadratha, the brave, mighty and wise one.

बृहद्रथस्य पुत्रस्तु महावीरो महाबलः ।
महावीरस्य धृतिमान् सुधृतिः सत्यविक्रमः ॥
Brihadratha’s son was Mahavira, possessed of great strength. Mahavira’s son was Dhritiman, and his son was Sudhriti, of true valour.

सुधृतेः पुत्रस्त्वमरजोऽमरजोस्य प्रतिश्रुतः ।
प्रतिश्रुतस्य पुत्रोऽभूद् उपगुप्तो महाबलः ॥
Sudhriti’s son was Amaraja, and Amaraja’s son was Pratishruta. Pratishruta’s son was the mighty Upagupta.

उपगुप्तस्य पुत्रोऽभूत् शङ्खो नाम महाबलः ।
शङ्खस्य तु सुतोऽभूत् स्वगतो नाम वीर्यवान् ॥
Upagupta’s son was the mighty Shankha. Shankha’s son was the valiant Svagata.

स्वगतस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूत् सुचिरश्च महाबलः ।
सुचिरेस्तु सुतोऽभूत् ध्रुवसन्धिरिति स्मृतः ॥
Svagata’s son was Suchira, the mighty one. Suchira’s son was known as Dhruvasandhi.

ध्रुवसन्धेस्तु पुत्रोऽभूद् मरुर्नाम महाबलः ।
मरुपुत्रस्तु कीर्तिंश्च पुत्रोऽभूद् देवमीढकः ॥
Dhruvasandhi’s son was the mighty Maru. Maru’s son was Kirtiman, and Kirtiman’s son was Devamidha.

देवमीढस्य पुत्रस्तु कीर्तिरातो महाबलः ।
कीर्तिरातस्य पुत्रोऽभूद् महारोमा महाबलः ॥
Devamidha’s son was the mighty Kirtirata. Kirtirata’s son was the mighty Maharoma.

महारोम्णस्तु पुत्रोऽभूद् स्वर्णरोमा महाबलः ।
स्वर्णरोम्णस्तु पुत्रोऽभूद् ह्रस्वरोमा महाबलः ॥
Maharoma’s son was the mighty Svarnaroma. Svarnaroma’s son was the mighty Hrasvaroma.

ह्रस्वरोम्णस्तु पुत्रौ द्वौ सीरध्वजकुशध्वजौ ।
सीरध्वजस्तु ज्येष्ठोऽभूद् राजा धर्मपरायणः ॥
Hrasvaroma had two sons, Siradhvaja and Kushadhvaja. Siradhvaja was the elder and was a king devoted to righteousness.

सीरध्वजस्य तु सुता सीता नामासितेति नः ।
कुशध्वजस्य पुत्रोऽभूत् भानुमान् नाम वीर्यवान् ॥
Siradhvaja had a daughter named Sita. Kushadhvaja’s son was the valiant Bhanuman.

भानुमतः सुतोऽभूद् शतद्युम्न इति श्रुतः ।
शतद्युम्नस्य पुत्रोऽभूद् शुचिरित्यभिविश्रुतः ॥
Bhanuman’s son was known as Shatadyumna. Shatadyumna’s son was renowned as Shuchi.

शुचेः पुत्रोऽभवद् धर्मध्वज इति विश्रुतः ।
धर्मध्वजस्य पुत्रौ द्वौ कुशध्वजमहीध्रजौ ॥
Shuchi’s son was renowned as Dharmadhvaja. Dharmadhvaja had two sons, Kushadhvaja and Mahidhvaja.

कुशध्वजस्य पुत्रोऽभूद् राजा भानुमति स्मृतः ।
महिध्वजस्य पुत्रोऽभूद् शतद्युम्न इति श्रुतः ॥
Kushadhvaja’s son was the king known as Bhanumati. Mahidhvaja’s son was known as Shatadyumna.

एतेषां वंशजाः सर्वे जनकानां महात्मनाम् ।
धर्मात्मानो महावीर्या मिथिलायां नराधिपाः ॥
All these descendants of the great-souled Janakas were righteous and mighty kings who ruled in Mithila.

इत्युक्त्वा मुनिशार्दूलो वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः ।
जनकं प्रत्युवाचेदं वचनं मधुरं शुभम् ॥
Having spoken thus, the venerable sage Vasistha, the tiger among sages, addressed Janaka in sweet and auspicious words.
43
इक्ष्वाकूणामयं वंशः सुमहायशसां नृप ।
आगतो रघुशार्दूल दशरथस्य नः प्रभो ॥
“O king, this is the lineage of the illustrious Ikshvakus, extending down to our lord Dasharatha, the tiger among the Raghus.”
इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे सप्ततितमः सर्गः ।
Thus ends the seventieth Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, the original epic.
