Verse 1
शुनःशेपं नरश्रेष्ठं विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
रक्षार्थं तस्य राजर्षेः पुत्रान् स्वान् प्रत्यभाषत ॥
The great sage Vishvamitra spoke to his own sons for the protection of Shunahshepa, the best among men and the son of the royal sage.
Verse 2
पुत्रा वः शुनःशेपोऽयं शरणं शरणागतः ।
रक्ष्यतां सर्वथा पुत्रा मा वधिष्टं तपोधनाः ॥
“This Shunahshepa has come to me seeking refuge. O my sons, protect him in every way. Do not let him be killed, O you whose wealth is austerity.”
Verse 3
ते तु तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ।
ऊचुः परमसंरब्धा वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदाः ॥
Hearing the words of the wise Vishvamitra, they became greatly angered and, skilled in speech, replied.
Verse 4
कथमात्मसुतान् हित्वा त्रायसेऽन्यसुतं मुने ।
अकार्यमिव पश्यामो न त्वां धर्मे व्यवस्थितम् ॥
“How can you abandon your own sons and protect another man’s son, O sage? We see this as improper and do not consider you established in righteousness.”
Verse 5
एवमुक्तस्तु पुत्रैस्तु क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजा पुत्रानिदमुवाच ह ॥
Thus addressed by his sons, the greatly radiant Vishvamitra, his eyes reddened with anger, spoke these words to his sons.
Verse 6
श्वपाकवत् पुत्रा यूयं दीर्घकालं भविष्यथ ।
मांसानि भक्षयन्तो वै नृणां बहूनि सर्वशः ॥
“O sons, you shall become like outcastes for a long period, eating the flesh of many men.”
Verse 7
श्वपाकवत् पुत्रा यूयं दीर्घकालं भविष्यथ ।
कुत्सितं कर्म कुर्वन्तो मच्छासनविवर्जिताः ॥
“O sons, you shall live like outcastes for a long period, performing despicable deeds and disregarding my command.”
Verse 8
एवं शप्त्वा महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
शुनःशेपं समाश्वास्य पुनरेवाब्रवीद् वचः ॥
Having cursed them thus, the greatly radiant great sage Vishvamitra consoled Shunahshepa and again spoke.
Verse 9
इमौ कुमारौ मधुरौ देवराजसमप्रभौ ।
अम्बरीषस्य राजर्षेः पुत्रौ सत्यपराक्रमौ ॥
“These two boys, gentle and radiant like the king of the gods, are the sons of the royal sage Ambarisha and possess true valour.”

एतयोरेकतमं पुत्रं शुनःशेपं प्रदास्यथ ।
यज्ञे राज्ञो महात्मानो रक्षार्थं यज्ञसत्तमम् ॥
“Give one of these sons in place of Shunahshepa for the protection of the sacrifice of the great king.”

ततः पुत्रान् समानीय विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं यज्ञस्यार्थे महातपाः ॥
Then the great sage Vishvamitra gathered the sons and spoke sweet words for the purpose of the sacrifice.

सर्वे भवन्तः कुर्वन्तु धर्मकार्यं महात्मनः ।
शुनःशेपस्य रक्षार्थं यज्ञस्य च हिताय वै ॥
“May all of you perform this righteous duty for the great-souled one, for the protection of Shunahshepa and for the welfare of the sacrifice.”

ततः सर्वे समागम्य मुनयः सत्यवादिनः ।
विश्वामित्रं महात्मानं प्रत्युवाचुस्तपोधनाः ॥
Then all the truthful sages assembled and spoke to the great-souled Vishvamitra, whose wealth was austerity.

न शक्यमेतत् कर्तुं वै पुत्राणां तु विशेषतः ।
शुनःशेपस्य रक्षार्थं यज्ञे राज्ञो महात्मनः ॥
“It is not possible to do this, especially with regard to your sons, for the protection of Shunahshepa in the great king’s sacrifice.”

ततः क्रुद्धो महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
शप्त्वा पुत्रान् पुनः सर्वान् तप एव समाश्रितः ॥
Then the greatly radiant great sage Vishvamitra became angry, cursed all his sons again, and devoted himself once more to austerities.

तस्य शापेन ते पुत्राः श्वपाका इव जातकाः ।
बहून् वर्षगणान् घोरं दुःखमापुर्महात्मनः ॥
By his curse, those sons became like outcastes and suffered terrible hardship for many years.

शुनःशेपस्तु धर्मात्मा विश्वामित्रेण रक्षितः ।
यज्ञे राज्ञो महात्मानं तोषयामास तं मुनिम् ॥
The righteous Shunahshepa, protected by Vishvamitra, satisfied the great sage at the king’s sacrifice.

ततः स मुनिशार्दूलो विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
ऋचीकस्य सुतं दृष्ट्वा शुनःशेपं महायशाः ॥
Then the great ascetic Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages and greatly renowned, saw Shunahshepa, the son of Ruchika.

तं दृष्ट्वा मुनिशार्दूलः शुनःशेपं महातपाः ।
अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं प्रीतो मुनिसत्तमः ॥
Seeing Shunahshepa, the tiger among sages and great ascetic, Vishvamitra, pleased, spoke sweet words to the excellent sage.

एष ते पुत्रकः शुनःशेपो मया दत्तः ।
धर्मेणैव महाबाहो गृहाणैनं महामते ॥
“This Shunahshepa is now your son, given by me. O mighty-armed, O wise one, accept him according to dharma.”

ततः स मुनिशार्दूलो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
शुनःशेपं महाभागं स्वपुत्रत्वेऽभ्यकल्पयत् ॥
Then Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages and great ascetic, accepted the greatly fortunate Shunahshepa as his own son.

ततः प्रहृष्टो भगवान् शुनःशेपो महायशाः ।
विश्वामित्रं प्रणम्याथ तस्थौ तत्र कृताञ्जलिः ॥
Then the greatly renowned Shunahshepa became delighted, bowed to Vishvamitra, and stood there with folded hands.

ततः प्रीतमनाः सर्वे देवाः सर्षिगणाः प्रभुम् ।
विश्वामित्रं महात्मानं तुष्टुवुः परमर्षयः ॥
Then all the gods together with the groups of sages and the supreme seers praised the great-souled Vishvamitra.

सिद्धाश्च ऋषयश्चैव गन्धर्वाश्च महर्षयः ।
सर्वे ते मुनिशार्दूलं प्रशशंसुः पुनः पुनः ॥
The Siddhas, sages, Gandharvas and great seers all praised the tiger among sages again and again.

ततः प्रहृष्टो भगवान् विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
प्रणम्य सर्वदेवांश्च स्वाश्रमं पुनरागमत् ॥
Then the venerable great ascetic Vishvamitra, greatly pleased, bowed to all the gods and returned to his hermitage.

शुनःशेपोऽपि धर्मात्मा तत्रैव तपसि स्थितः ।
विश्वामित्रस्य शिष्यत्वं प्राप्य धर्मे व्यवस्थितः ॥
The righteous Shunahshepa also remained there devoted to austerity. Having become a disciple of Vishvamitra, he remained established in dharma.

ततः स मुनिशार्दूलो विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
तपश्चचार घोरं वै ब्रह्मर्षित्वमभीप्सया ॥
Then Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages and great ascetic, performed severe austerities, desiring to attain Brahmarshi-hood.

एवं तपःसमायुक्तो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
ब्रह्मर्षित्वमवाप्नोति वसिष्ठेनाभिपूजितः ॥
Thus engaged in austerity, the great sage Vishvamitra attained Brahmarshi-hood and was honoured by Vasistha.
इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे द्विषष्टितमः सर्गः ।
Thus ends the sixty-second Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, the original epic.
