Verse 1
गाधेः पुत्रो महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
कदाचित् कौशिकीतीरे तपस्तेपे महातपाः ॥
The greatly radiant Vishvamitra, son of Gadhi and the great sage, once performed severe austerities on the bank of the river Kaushiki.
Verse 2
तस्य तत्राश्रमपदे शुनःशेपो महामुनिः ।
आश्रमं मुनिशार्दूलमाजगाम महायशाः ॥
At that hermitage, the greatly renowned great sage Shunahshepa came to the hermitage of Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages.
Verse 3
शुनःशेपस्तु राजर्षेः पुत्रोऽभूद् भरतर्षभ ।
ऋचीकस्य महात्मनः पौत्रः सत्यपराक्रमः ॥
O best of the Bharatas, Shunahshepa was the son of a royal sage and the grandson of the great-souled Ruchika, who possessed true valour.
Verse 4
तं दृष्ट्वा मुनिशार्दूलं विश्वामित्रं महातपाः ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा तस्य चरणौ प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥
Seeing Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages and great ascetic, he bowed his head and respectfully worshipped his feet.
Verse 5
तं दृष्ट्वा मुनिशार्दूलं शुनःशेपं महातपाः ।
पप्रच्छ कुशलं तस्य पितरं चाप्यपृच्छत ॥
Seeing Shunahshepa, the tiger among sages and great ascetic, Vishvamitra asked about his welfare and also enquired about his father.
Verse 6
स तु दुःखसमाविष्टः शुनःशेपो महातपाः ।
उवाच वचनं धीमान् विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम् ॥
Shunahshepa, overcome with sorrow, spoke to the wise Vishvamitra, whose wealth was austerity.
Verse 7
पिता मे यज्ञकामस्य राज्ञो वै वरुणस्य च ।
वरुणेन हि मे प्राणाः प्रतिज्ञाता नृपस्य वै ॥
“My father, desiring a sacrifice, made a promise to King Varuna. My life has been pledged to Varuna on behalf of the king.”

तं मां राजर्षयः सर्वे वरुणस्य नृपस्य च ।
समागम्य महाभागं रक्षन्तु तपसि स्थितम् ॥
“May all these royal sages and the great king Varuna protect me, who am established in austerity.”

एवमुक्तो महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
शुनःशेपं महाभागं प्रत्युवाच महामुनिः ॥
Thus addressed, the greatly radiant and great ascetic Vishvamitra spoke to the greatly fortunate Shunahshepa.

मा शुचः पुत्र भद्रं ते शरणं तेऽस्मि राघव ।
अहं त्वां परिरक्षिष्ये यथाशक्ति महामते ॥
“Do not grieve, my child. May you be blessed. I am your refuge, and I shall protect you to the best of my ability, O wise one.”

ततः स मुनिशार्दूलो विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं शुनःशेपं महामुनिम् ॥
Then Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages and great ascetic, spoke sweet words to Shunahshepa.

गच्छ पुत्र महाभाग ऋचीकं पितरं तव ।
गत्वा तं प्रणिपत्याशु शरणं त्वं समाश्रय ॥
“Go, my child, O greatly fortunate one, to your father Ruchika. Go to him, bow before him, and quickly seek refuge in him.”

ततः स मुनिशार्दूलः शुनःशेपो महायशाः ।
पितरं प्रत्युपागम्य वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥
Then the greatly renowned Shunahshepa, the tiger among sages, approached his father and spoke these words.

पितर्मां परिरक्षस्व न मे त्राणमिहास्ति वै ।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजा शरणं मे गतः प्रभुः ॥
“Father, protect me. There is no other protection for me here. The greatly radiant Vishvamitra has become my refuge.”

ततः स महातेजा ऋचीकः परमर्षिसत्तमः ।
उवाच वचनं पुत्रं शुनःशेपं तपोधनः ॥
Then the greatly radiant Ruchika, the foremost among great sages and whose wealth was austerity, spoke to his son Shunahshepa.

नाहं दास्यामि ते प्राणान् यज्ञे राज्ञो महात्मनः ।
शुनःशेपं तु मां पुत्रं त्यजस्वेति न चाब्रवीत् ॥
“I shall not give your life for the sacrifice of the great king, nor did he say, ‘Take me instead of my son Shunahshepa.’”

ततः स मुनिशार्दूलः शुनःशेपो महायशाः ।
विश्वामित्रमुपागम्य वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥
Then the greatly renowned Shunahshepa, the tiger among sages, approached Vishvamitra and spoke these words.

भगवन् शरणं तेऽहं गतः सर्वात्मना मुने ।
त्राहि मां महतो दुःखाद् यज्ञे राज्ञो नृपात्मज ॥
“O Bhagavan, O sage, I have come to you for refuge with all my being. Protect me from this great suffering, in the sacrifice of the king, O prince.”

ततः स मुनिशार्दूलो विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
उवाच वचनं श्रुत्वा शुनःशेपं महायशाः ॥
Then Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages and great ascetic, hearing the words of the greatly renowned Shunahshepa, spoke.
20
इह त्वं वत्स तिष्ठस्व मा भैस्ते नास्ति वै भयम् ।
अहं त्वां परिरक्षिष्ये यथाशक्ति तपोधन ॥
“Stay here, my child. Do not be afraid; there is no danger to you. I shall protect you to the best of my ability.”
21
ततः स मुनिशार्दूलः शुनःशेपो महातपाः ।
विश्वामित्रमुपागम्य वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥
Then Shunahshepa, the tiger among sages and great ascetic, approached Vishvamitra and spoke these words.
22
भगवन् मे दयां कृत्वा रक्ष मां मुनिसत्तम ।
यज्ञे राज्ञो महाभाग प्राणान् मे दीयतां प्रभो ॥
“O venerable one, O best of sages, have compassion upon me and protect me. O greatly fortunate lord, let my life be spared in the king’s sacrifice.”
इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे एकषष्टितमः सर्गः ।
Thus ends the sixty-first Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, the original epic.
