Verse 1
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य त्रिशङ्कोर्विश्वामित्रस्तदा ।
अब्रवीन्नरशार्दूलं राजर्षिं तं तपोधनः ॥
Hearing the words of Trishanku, Vishvamitra, whose wealth was austerity, spoke to that royal sage, the tiger among men.
Verse 2
अलं भद्रं तवाख्यातं गमिष्यसि न संशयः ।
स्वशरीरेण राजेन्द्र देवानां परमां गतिम् ॥
“Enough. You have spoken well. O lord of kings, you shall certainly attain the highest abode of the gods with your own body. There is no doubt.”
Verse 3
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ।
हर्षेण महता युक्तस्त्रिशङ्कुरिदमब्रवीत् ॥
Hearing the words of the wise Vishvamitra, Trishanku, filled with great joy, spoke these words.
Verse 4
भगवन् मे गतिः सा तु यथा पूर्वं प्रतिश्रुता ।
तथा कुरु महाभाग कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि ॥
“O Bhagavan, may my destination be as you have promised earlier. O greatly fortunate one, having compassion upon me, please make it so.”
Verse 5
एवमुक्तो महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
तस्य सन्तर्पणार्थाय पुत्रान् सृष्ट्वा महातपाः ॥
Thus addressed, the greatly radiant and great ascetic Vishvamitra, desiring to satisfy him, created sons.
Verse 6
ततो मुनिश्रेष्ठः कौशिकः परमर्षिसत्तमः ।
ऋत्विजश्च तदा सृष्ट्वा याजकांश्च तथैव च ॥
Then Kaushika, the foremost of sages and the best among great seers, created the priests and officiating sacrificial priests.
Verse 7
आहूय सर्वान् ऋषीन् विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
अब्रवीद् वचनं सर्वान् यज्ञस्य च समारम्भम् ॥
The great sage Vishvamitra summoned all the sages and spoke to them about the commencement of the sacrifice.
Verse 8
यज्ञस्य च समाप्त्यर्थं सर्वे तत्र समागताः ।
विश्वामित्रस्य शिष्याश्च ऋत्विजश्च तपोधनाः ॥
All the disciples of Vishvamitra and the sages whose wealth was austerity gathered there for the completion of the sacrifice.
Verse 9
सर्वे ते मुनयः सिद्धाः सर्वे च ऋषयस्तथा ।
यज्ञं तत्र समारभ्य यथाविधि समाहिताः ॥
All those accomplished sages and seers began the sacrifice there according to the prescribed rites, with concentrated minds.
Verse 10
ततः स राजा राजर्षिर्विश्वामित्रेण धीमता ।
याज्यमानस्तदा तत्र देवान् आह्वयत प्रभुः ॥
Then the royal sage Trishanku, the lord, being caused to perform the sacrifice by the wise Vishvamitra, invoked the gods there.
Verse 11
नाजग्मुस्ते ततो देवाः साग्निहोत्राः सहर्षिभिः ।
विश्वामित्रस्तु तान् दृष्ट्वा क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ॥
But the gods did not come there together with the sages and Agnihotra. Seeing this, Vishvamitra’s eyes became reddened with anger.

अब्रवीत् स महातेजा त्रिशङ्कुं राजसत्तमम् ।
सशरीरो व्रज त्रिशङ्को देवानां परमां गतिम् ॥
The greatly radiant Vishvamitra said to the excellent king Trishanku, “O Trishanku, ascend with your physical body to the highest abode of the gods.”

विश्वामित्रस्य वाक्येन तदा राजा त्रिशङ्कुकः ।
सशरीरो दिवं ययौ सर्वलोकान् समन्ततः ॥
By the words of Vishvamitra, King Trishanku then ascended to heaven with his physical body, passing through all the worlds.

गच्छन्तं तं तु राजानं त्रिशङ्कुं पाकशासनः ।
सहस्राक्षो देवपतिर्वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥
As that king Trishanku was ascending, Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt and lord of the gods, spoke these words.

त्रिशङ्को गच्छ भद्रं ते नास्ति तेऽत्र गतिः प्रभो ।
पतस्वावाक्शिरा भूमौ नास्ति ते स्वर्गवासिता ॥
“O Trishanku, may you be blessed. You have no place here, O lord. Fall head downward to the earth; you have no place in heaven.”

इत्युक्तो देवपतिना त्रिशङ्कुरपतद्भुवि ।
विश्वामित्रं महात्मानं हाहेत्याह पुनः पुनः ॥
Thus addressed by the lord of the gods, Trishanku began to fall toward the earth and repeatedly cried, “O Vishvamitra! O Vishvamitra!”

तं दृष्ट्वा पतितं भूमौ विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
अब्रवीत् क्रोधसंरक्तो वाक्यमेतद् महामुनिः ॥
Seeing him falling toward the earth, the great ascetic Vishvamitra, with eyes reddened by anger, spoke these words.

तिष्ठ तिष्ठ त्रिशङ्कोऽसि न पतस्वावनिं पुनः ।
मया सृष्टोऽयमाकाशे लोकः स्वर्गसमः शुभः ॥
“Stay! Stay, O Trishanku. Do not fall again to the earth. I have created this auspicious region in the sky, equal to heaven.”

नक्षत्राणि च सर्वाणि ग्रहान् सर्वान् तथैव च ।
सप्तर्षींश्च तथा देवान् स्वर्गे स्थापयितुं प्रभुः ॥
“I have established all the stars, all the planets, the Seven Sages and the gods in this new heaven.”

दक्षिणं दिशमाश्रित्य नक्षत्राणि च सर्वशः ।
अवकाशं च कृतवान् स्वर्गस्येव न संशयः ॥
“Taking the southern direction as its basis, I have created a space filled with stars, like heaven itself, without doubt.”
21
एवं विश्वामित्रेण सृष्टो लोकः सनातनः ।
त्रिशङ्कुस्तत्र तिष्ठत्वमित्युक्त्वा मुनिपुङ्गवः ॥
Thus Vishvamitra created an enduring world and said, “Let Trishanku remain there.”

ततः क्रोधसमाविष्टो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
सृष्ट्वा नक्षत्रवंशं तु पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत ॥
Then the great sage Vishvamitra, filled with anger, created a host of stars and again spoke.

सृष्टोऽयं लोकः सशरीरस्य त्रिशङ्कोः ।
तिष्ठतु नित्यं सशरीरस्त्रिशङ्कुः ॥
“This world has been created for Trishanku with his physical body. Let Trishanku remain here forever with his physical body.”
24
यावत् त्रैलोक्यमाख्यातं तावत् स्थास्यति मे कृतः ।
नक्षत्राणां गणो ह्येष त्रिशङ्कोरमितप्रभः ॥
“This host of stars of immeasurable splendour, created by me, shall remain for as long as the three worlds are known to exist.”
इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे अष्टपञ्चाशः सर्गः ।
Thus ends the fifty-eighth Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, the original epic.
