Verse 1

ततः परमसन्तुष्टो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।

ब्रह्मर्षित्वं समापन्नो वसिष्ठमुपगच्छत ॥

Then the great sage Vishvamitra, having become completely satisfied and having attained Brahmarshi-hood, approached Vasistha.

Verse 2

अभिवाद्य महात्मानं वसिष्ठं मुनिसत्तमम् ।

उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ॥

Having bowed to the great-souled Vasistha, the excellent sage, the great sage Vishvamitra spoke sweet words.

Verse 3

ब्रह्मर्षिरस्मि भगवान् वसिष्ठस्य प्रसादतः ।

तत्सर्वमस्त्रं भगवन् मया प्राप्तं तपोबलात् ॥

“O venerable one, I am a Brahmarshi by the grace of Vasistha. Through the power of austerity, I have obtained all those weapons.”

Verse 4

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वसिष्ठो मुनिसत्तमः ।

प्रहृष्टवदनो भूत्वा विश्वामित्रमथाब्रवीत् ॥

Hearing those words, Vasistha, the excellent sage, became joyful and spoke to Vishvamitra.

Verse 5

ब्रह्मर्षिरसि कौशिक सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः ।

मया त्वं परितुष्टेन ब्रह्मर्षित्वमुपागतः ॥

“O Kaushika, you are indeed a Brahmarshi. Truly, truly, there is no doubt. Being completely pleased with you, I recognize that you have attained Brahmarshi-hood.”

Verse 6

ततः परमसन्तुष्टौ तावुभौ मुनिपुङ्गवौ ।

परस्परमभिवाद्याथ जग्मतुः स्वाश्रमं प्रति ॥

Then the two foremost sages, completely satisfied, respectfully greeted each other and went to their respective hermitages.

Verse 7

विश्वामित्रो महातेजा ब्रह्मर्षित्वमवाप्य च ।

सर्वास्त्राणि च सम्प्राप्य कृतार्थोऽभवद् द्विजः ॥

The greatly radiant Vishvamitra, having attained Brahmarshi-hood and obtained all the weapons, became fulfilled as a Brahmin sage.

Verse 8

वसिष्ठस्य तु तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा देवाः सवासवाः ।

सर्वे हृष्टमनसोऽभूवन् विश्वामित्रस्य चेष्टितैः ॥

Hearing the words of Vasistha, all the gods together with Indra became delighted by the accomplishment of Vishvamitra.

Verse 9

सिद्धाश्च ऋषयश्चैव गन्धर्वाश्च महर्षयः ।

सर्वे प्रशंसां चक्रुस्तं विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् ॥

The Siddhas, sages, Gandharvas and great seers all praised the great sage Vishvamitra.

Verse 10

ततः प्रहृष्टो भगवान् वसिष्ठो मुनिपुङ्गवः ।

विश्वामित्रं महातेजा उपगम्याभ्यपूजयत् ॥

Then the venerable Vasistha, the foremost of sages, greatly pleased, approached and honoured the greatly radiant Vishvamitra.

Verse 11

उभौ तौ मुनिशार्दूलौ परस्परमभिवाद्य च ।

स्वस्वाश्रमं तदा गत्वा तपस्तेपतुरुत्तमम् ॥

Those two tigers among sages respectfully greeted each other and then returned to their respective hermitages, where they continued their excellent austerities.

Verse 12

एवं ब्रह्मर्षितां प्राप्तो विश्वामित्रो महायशाः ।

वसिष्ठेनाभ्यनुज्ञातो ब्रह्मलोकमवाप्तवान् ॥

Thus the greatly renowned Vishvamitra attained Brahmarshi-hood. With the permission and approval of Vasistha, he attained the world of Brahman.

Verse 13

ततः कदाचित् काकुत्स्थ विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।

नदीतीरे तपस्तेपे कौशिकीं नाम निर्मलाम् ॥

O Kakutstha, once the great sage Vishvamitra performed austerities on the bank of the pure river named Kaushiki.

Verse 14

तत्र तस्याश्रमं रम्यं सिद्धचारणसेवितम् ।

तत्रासीनं मुनिश्रेष्ठं देवा दृष्ट्वा समागताः ॥

There was his beautiful hermitage, frequented by Siddhas and Charanas. The gods came there and saw the excellent sage seated in meditation.

Verse 15

तं दृष्ट्वा मुनिशार्दूलं देवाः सर्षिगणाः प्रभुम् ।

पूजयामासुरव्यग्राः सर्वे शक्रपुरोगमाः ॥

Seeing that lord, the tiger among sages, the gods together with the groups of sages, led by Indra, respectfully worshipped him.

Verse 16

ततः शक्रः सुरश्रेष्ठो विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् ।

उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं प्रसन्नेनान्तरात्मना ॥

Then Indra, the foremost of the gods, spoke sweet words to the great sage Vishvamitra with a pleased heart.

Verse 17

तपसा महता राजन् ब्रह्मर्षित्वमुपागतः ।

कृतार्थोऽसि महाभाग तपसा भावितात्मना ॥

“O king, through great austerity you have attained Brahmarshi-hood. O greatly fortunate one, your purpose has been fulfilled through austerity that has purified your being.”

Verse 18

ततः स मुनिशार्दूलो विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।

उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं शक्रं देवरिपूदनम् ॥

Then the great ascetic Vishvamitra, the tiger among sages, spoke sweet words to Indra, the destroyer of the enemies of the gods.

Verse 19

भगवन् देवदेवेश तपसा मे महत्फलम् ।

प्राप्तं सर्वं सुरश्रेष्ठ यथाभिलषितं मया ॥

“O Bhagavan, O Lord of the gods, O foremost among the gods, through austerity I have obtained great fruit and everything that I desired.”

Verse 20

सिद्धार्थोऽस्मि महाभाग तपसा भावितात्मना ।

यथेष्टं गच्छ देवेश सर्वं मे सफलं कृतम् ॥

“O greatly fortunate Lord of the gods, my purpose has been accomplished through austerity that has purified my being. Go as you wish; everything of mine has become fruitful.”

Verse 21

इत्युक्त्वा स महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।

तपस्येव परं युक्तो जगाम स्वाश्रमं प्रति ॥

Having spoken thus, the greatly radiant great sage Vishvamitra, remaining devoted to austerity, returned to his hermitage.

Verse 22

ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।

विश्वामित्रं महात्मानं प्रशशंसुः पुनः पुनः ॥

Then the gods together with the Gandharvas, Siddhas and supreme sages praised the great-souled Vishvamitra again and again.

Verse 23

सर्वे ते मुनिशार्दूलं विश्वामित्रं महाबलम् ।

अभ्यनन्दन् महात्मानं ब्रह्मर्षित्वमुपागतम् ॥

All of them rejoiced in the great-souled Vishvamitra, the mighty tiger among sages, who had attained Brahmarshi-hood.

Verse 24

एवं तपोबलसम्पन्नो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।

ब्रह्मर्षित्वं समापन्नः पूजितः सर्वदैवतैः ॥

Thus the great sage Vishvamitra, endowed with the power of austerity, attained Brahmarshi-hood and was honoured by all the gods.

इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे षट्पञ्चाशः सर्गः ।

Thus ends the fifty-sixth Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, the original epic.
