Verse 1

अफलस्तु ततश्शक्रो देवानग्निपुरोगमान् ।

अब्रवीत्त्रस्तनयनः सिद्धगन्धर्वचारणान् ॥

Then Indra, deprived of his testicles and with frightened eyes, spoke to the gods, Siddhas, Gandharvas and Charanas, with Agni at their head.

Verse 2

कुर्वता तपसो विघ्नं गौतमस्य महात्मनः ।

क्रोधमुत्पाद्य हि मया सुरकार्यमिदं कृतम् ॥

“By creating an obstacle to the austerities of the great-souled Gautama and arousing his anger, I have indeed accomplished this task for the gods.”

Verse 3

न च मेऽत्र विचारोऽस्ति यदिदं तपसः फलम् ।

गौतमस्य प्रभावेण नष्टं मे बलमुत्तमम् ॥

“I have no doubt that this has happened as the result of Gautama’s austerities. Through the power of Gautama, my great strength has been destroyed.”

Verse 4

तन्मां सुरवराः सर्वे सर्षिसङ्घाः सचारणाः ।

सुरकार्यकरं यूयं सफलं कर्तुमर्हथ ॥

“Therefore, O best of gods, together with the assemblies of sages and Charanas, you should make me whole again, since I have acted for the benefit of the gods.”

Verse 5

शतक्रतोर्वचः श्रुत्वा देवा अग्निपुरोगमाः ।

पितृदेवानुपेत्याहुः सह सर्वैर्मरुद्गणैः ॥

Hearing the words of Shatakratu, the gods, with Agni at their head, together with all the Maruts, approached the ancestral gods and spoke to them.

Verse 6

अयं शक्रो महाभागो गौतमेन महात्मना ।

शप्तो विनष्टवृषणः कथं शक्रो भविष्यति ॥

“This greatly fortunate Shakra has been cursed by the great-souled Gautama and has lost his virility. How shall Shakra become whole again?”

Verse 7

तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पितृदेवा महात्मनः ।

ऊचुस्तान् देवसङ्घांश्च सह सर्वैर्मरुद्गणैः ॥

Hearing their words, the great ancestral gods spoke to the hosts of gods together with all the Maruts.

Verse 8

अजा मेषस्य वृषणावुत्पाट्य सुरसत्तमाः ।

शक्रस्य वृषणौ योज्यं तेन शक्रो भविष्यति ॥

“O best of gods, take the testicles of a ram and attach them to Shakra. In this way Shakra shall become whole again.”

Verse 9

ततः शक्रस्य वृषणौ मेषस्योत्पाट्य चोभयौ ।

योजयामासतुर्देवाः शक्रस्य परमात्मनः ॥

Then the gods removed the two testicles of the ram and attached them to Shakra, the great-souled Lord of the gods.

Verse 10

स तु शक्रो महातेजा वृषणाभ्यां समन्वितः ।

पुनः स्वं रूपमास्थाय देवानामग्रतोऽभवत् ॥

Then the greatly radiant Shakra, having been endowed with testicles, regained his former form and appeared before the gods.

Verse 11

ततः सर्वे सुरगणाः शक्रमभ्यर्च्य सादरम् ।

तुष्टुवुर्मुनयश्चैव सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ॥

Then all the hosts of gods respectfully worshipped Shakra, and the sages, Siddhas and supreme Rishis praised him.

Verse 12

अथ शक्रो महातेजा गौतमं समुपागमत् ।

प्रसादयितुमारेभे तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषम् ॥

Then the greatly radiant Shakra approached Gautama and began to seek his forgiveness, for Gautama had burned away his sins through austerity.

Verse 13

तं दृष्ट्वा देवसङ्घाश्च ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः ।

सर्वे समेत्य मुनिना गौतमेन महात्मना ॥

Seeing him, the hosts of gods and the sages whose wealth was austerity assembled together with the great-souled sage Gautama.

Verse 14

ऊचुस्तं मुनिशार्दूलं प्रसादं कुरु शक्रतः ।

देवकार्यं कृतं तेन त्वया चापि महात्मना ॥

They said to that tiger among sages, “Be gracious toward Shakra. He has performed a task for the gods, and you too are a great-souled one.”

Verse 15

ततः प्रसन्नो भगवान् गौतमो मुनिसत्तमः ।

शक्रमामन्त्र्य धर्मात्मा पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत ॥

Then the venerable and excellent sage Gautama became pleased. The righteous sage addressed Shakra once again.

Verse 16

अहल्यां शापमोक्षार्थं रामस्यागमनं प्रति ।

उवाच परमं वाक्यं गौतमो मुनिसत्तमः ॥

Gautama, the excellent sage, spoke of the coming of Rama, by which Ahalya would be released from her curse.

Verse 17

यदा रामो महातेजा आश्रमं ते गमिष्यति ।

तदा त्वं शापनिर्मुक्ता भविष्यसि न संशयः ॥

“When the greatly radiant Rama comes to your hermitage, then you shall certainly be freed from the curse. There is no doubt about this.”

Verse 18

राघवौ तु ततस्तस्याः पादौ जगृहतुस्तदा ।

स्मरन्ती गौतमवचः प्रतिजग्राह सा च तौ ॥

Then Rama and Lakshmana grasped her feet. Remembering Gautama’s words, she received them as guests.

Verse 19

पाद्यमर्घ्यं तथातिथ्यं चकार सुसमाहिता ।

प्रतिजग्राह काकुत्स्थो विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥

She offered them water for washing their feet, the customary offering and hospitality. The Kakutstha Rama accepted them according to the prescribed rites.

Verse 20

पुष्पवृष्टिर्महत्यासीद्देवदुन्दुभिनिःस्वनैः ।

गन्धर्वाप्सरसां चैव महानासीत् समागमः ॥

There was a great shower of flowers, accompanied by the sound of divine drums. The Gandharvas and Apsaras also assembled in great numbers.

Verse 21

साधु साध्विति देवास्तामहल्यां समपूजयन् ।

तपोबलविशुद्धाङ्गीं गौतमस्य वशानुगाम् ॥

The gods praised Ahalya, saying, “Well done! Well done!” Her limbs had been purified by the power of austerity, and she had returned to Gautama’s way of life.

Verse 22

गौतमोऽपि महातेजा अहल्यासहितः सुखी ।

रामं सम्पूज्य विधिवत् तपस्तेपे महातपाः ॥

The greatly radiant Gautama, reunited with Ahalya and filled with happiness, duly honoured Rama and continued his great austerities.

Verse 23

रामोऽपि परमां पूजां गौतमस्य महामुनेः ।

सकाशाद् विधिवत् प्राप्य जगाम मिथिलां ततः ॥

Rama too, having duly received the highest honour from the great sage Gautama, then proceeded to Mithila.

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे एकोनपञ्चाशः सर्गः ॥

Thus ends the forty-ninth Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, the original epic.
