Verse 1

पुत्रत्वं तु गते विष्णौ राज्ञस्तस्य महात्मनः । उवाच देवताः सर्वाः स्वयंभूर्भगवानिदम् ॥

When Vishnu had attained the sonship of the great-souled King Dasharatha, Brahma, the self-created Lord, spoke these words to all the gods.

Verse 2

सत्यसंधस्य वीरस्य सर्वेषां नो हितैषिणः । विष्णोः सहायान् बलिनः सृजध्वं कामरूपिणः ॥

Create mighty companions for Vishnu, the truthful and heroic one, who desires the welfare of us all, and who are capable of assuming forms according to their will.

Verse 3

मायाविदश्च शूरांश्च वायुवेगसमान् जवे । नयज्ञान् बुद्धिसंपन्नान् विष्णुतुल्यपराक्रमान् ॥

Create heroic beings who know magical arts, who are equal to the wind in speed, who know statecraft, who are endowed with intelligence, and whose valor equals that of Vishnu.

Verse 4

असंहार्यान् उपायज्ञान् दिव्यसंहननान्वितान् । सर्वास्त्रगुणसंपन्नानमृतप्राशनानिव ॥

Create beings who cannot easily be destroyed, who know various strategies, who possess divine and powerful bodies, and who are endowed with the qualities of all weapons, like those who partake of nectar.

Verse 5

अप्सरस्सु च मुख्यासु गन्धर्वाणां तनूषु च । यक्षपन्नगकन्यासु ऋक्षविद्याधरीषु च ॥

From the foremost Apsaras, from the bodies of Gandharva women, from the daughters of Yakshas and Nagas, and from female bears and Vidyadharis—

Verse 6

किंनरीणां च गात्रेषु वानरीनां तनूषु च । सृजध्वं हरिरूपेण पुत्रांस्तुल्यपराक्रमान् ॥

—and from the bodies of Kinnaras and female Vanaras, create sons in the form of Vanaras, possessing valor equal to Vishnu.

Verse 7

पूर्वमेव मया सृष्टो जाम्बवान् ऋक्षपुङ्गवः । जृम्भमाणस्य सहसा मम वक्त्रादजायत ॥

I have already created Jambavan, the foremost of bears. He suddenly came forth from my mouth when I yawned.

Verse 8

ते तथोक्ताः भगवता तत्प्रतिश्रुत्य शासनम् । जनयामासुरेवं ते पुत्रान् वानररूपिणः ॥

Thus addressed by the Lord, those gods accepted his command and accordingly began to produce sons in the form of Vanaras.

Verse 9

ऋषयश्च महात्मानः सिद्धविद्याधरोरगाः । चारणाश्च सुतान् वीरान् ससृजुर्वनचारिणः ॥

The great sages, Siddhas, Vidyadharas, Nagas, and Charanas also created heroic sons who wandered through the forests.

Verse 10

वानरेन्द्रं महेन्द्राभमिन्द्रो वालिनमात्मजम् । सुग्रीवं जनयामास तपनस्तपतां वरः ॥

Indra created Vali, the lord of the Vanaras, whose appearance was like Mount Mahendra. Surya, the foremost among those who radiate heat, created Sugriva.

Verse 11

बृहस्पतिस्त्वजनयत्तारं नाम महाकपिम् । सर्ववानरमुख्यानां बुद्धिमन्तमनुत्तमम् ॥

Brihaspati created the great Vanara named Tara, who was the most excellent and intelligent among all the foremost Vanaras.

Verse 12

धनदस्य सुतः श्रीमान् वानरो गन्धमादनः । विश्वकर्मा त्वजनयन्नलं नाम महाकपिम् ॥

The illustrious Vanara Gandhamadana was the son of Kubera, while Vishvakarma created the great Vanara named Nala.

Verse 13

पावकस्य सुतः श्रीमान् नीलोऽग्निसदृशप्रभः । तेजसा यशसा वीर्यात्त्यरिच्यत वीर्यवान् ॥

The illustrious Nila was the son of Agni. His radiance was like fire, and he surpassed the other Vanaras in brilliance, fame, and valor.

Verse 14

रूपद्रविणसंपन्नावश्विनौ रूपसंमतौ । मैन्दं च द्विविदं चैव जनयामासतुः स्वयम् ॥

The Ashvin twins, who were endowed with beauty, personally created two Vanaras, Mainda and Dvivida, both blessed with beautiful forms.

Verse 15

वरुणो जनयामास सुषेणं नाम वानरम् । शरभं जनयामास पर्जन्यस्तु महाबलः ॥

Varuna created the Vanara named Sushena, while the mighty Parjanya created Sharabha.

Verse 16

मारुतस्यौरसः श्रीमान् हनुमान्नाम वानरः । वज्रसंहननोपेतो वैनतेयसमो जवे ॥

The illustrious Hanuman was the direct son of Maruta. His body was as hard as a thunderbolt, and in speed he was equal to Garuda, the son of Vinata.

Verse 17

सर्ववानरमुख्येषु बुद्धिमान् बलवानपि । ते सृष्टा बहुसाहस्रा दशग्रीववधोद्यताः ॥

Among all the foremost Vanaras, he was intelligent and powerful. Many thousands of such beings were created, prepared for the destruction of the ten-headed Ravana.

Verse 18

अप्रमेयबला वीरा विक्रान्ताः कामरूपिणः । ते गजाचलसंकाशा वपुष्मन्तो महाबलाः ॥

Those heroic beings possessed immeasurable strength, great valor, and the ability to assume forms according to their will. They were mighty and had bodies resembling elephants and mountains.

Verse 19

ऋक्षवानरगोपुच्छाः क्षिप्रमेवाभिजज्ञिरे । यस्य देवस्य यद्रूपं वेषो यश्च पराक्रमः ॥

They quickly took birth as bears, Vanaras, and langurs. Each one possessed the form, appearance, and valor of the particular deity from whom he had arisen.

Verse 20

अजायत समं तेन तस्य तस्य पृथक्पृथक् । गोलाङ्गूलेषु चोत्पन्नाः किंचिदुन्नतविक्रमाः ॥

Each was born separately, possessing qualities corresponding to that deity. Some were born among the langurs and were endowed with exceptional valor.

Verse 21

ऋक्षीषु च तथा जाता वानराः किंनरीषु च । देवा महर्षिगन्धर्वास्तार्क्ष्ययक्षा यशस्विनः ॥

Others were born among female bears and Kinnaras. Gods, great sages, Gandharvas, Garudas, Yakshas, and other illustrious beings—

Verse 22

नागाः किंपुरुषाश्चैव सिद्धविद्याधरोरगाः । बहवो जनयामासुर्हृष्टास्तत्र सहस्रशः ॥

—along with Nagas, Kimpurushas, Siddhas, Vidyadharas, and Uragas, joyfully created many thousands of such beings.

Verse 23

चारणाश्च सुतान् वीरान् ससृजुर्वनचारिणः । वानरान् सुमहाकायान् सर्वान् वै वनचारिणः ॥

The Charanas also created heroic sons who wandered through the forests, all of them Vanaras with enormous bodies and accustomed to moving through the forests.

Verse 24

अप्सरस्सु च मुख्यासु तदा विद्याधरीषु च । नागकन्यासु च तदा गन्धर्वीणां तनूषु च ॥

They were also born from the foremost Apsaras, from Vidyadharis, from daughters of Nagas, and from the bodies of Gandharva women.

Verse 25

कामरूपबलोपेता यथाकामविचारिणः । सिंहशार्दूलसदृशा दर्पेण च बलेन च ॥

They possessed the power to assume whatever form they desired and could move wherever they wished. In pride and strength, they were like lions and tigers.

Verse 26

शिलाप्रहरणाः सर्वे सर्वे पर्वतयोधिनः । नखदंष्ट्रायुधाः सर्वे सर्वे सर्वास्त्रकोविदाः ॥

All of them used stones as weapons and fought with mountains and trees. Their nails and teeth were their weapons, and all were skilled in the use of various weapons.

Verse 27

विचालयेयुः शैलेन्द्रान् भेदयेयुः स्थिरान् द्रुमान् । क्षोभयेयुश्च वेगेन समुद्रं सरितां पतिम् ॥

They could shake the greatest mountains, uproot firmly rooted trees, and by their speed agitate the ocean, the lord of rivers.

Verse 28

दारयेयुः क्षितिं पद्भ्यामाप्लवेयुर्महार्णवम् । नभस्तलं विशेयुश्च गृह्णीयुरपि तोयदान् ॥

They could split the earth with their feet, leap across the great ocean, enter the sky, and even seize the clouds.

Verse 29

गृह्णीयुरपि मातङ्गान् मत्तान् प्रव्रजतो वने । नर्दमानाश्च नादेन पातयेयुर्विहङ्गमान् ॥

They could seize intoxicated elephants wandering through the forests, and with their roaring sounds they could cause birds flying in the sky to fall.

Verse 30

ईदृशानां प्रसूतानि हरीणां कामरूपिणाम् । शतं शतसहस्राणि यूथपानां महात्मनाम् ॥

Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of such great Vanara chiefs, capable of assuming forms according to their will, were brought forth.

Verse 31

ते प्रधानेषु यूथेषु हरीणां हरियूथपाः । बभूवुर्यूथपश्रेष्ठान् वीरांश्चाजनयन् हरीन् ॥

Those Vanara chiefs became the foremost leaders of the principal Vanara armies and also produced other heroic Vanaras.

Verse 32

अन्ये ऋक्षवतः प्रस्थानुपतस्थुः सहस्रशः । अन्ये नानाविधान् शैलान् काननानि च भेजिरे ॥

Thousands of others took their places on the slopes of Mount Rishyamuka, while others occupied various mountains and forests.

Verse 33

सूर्यपुत्रं च सुग्रीवं शक्रपुत्रं च वालिनम् । भ्रातरावुपतस्थुस्ते सर्वे च हरियूथपाः ॥

All the Vanara chiefs attended upon the two brothers, Sugriva, the son of Surya, and Vali, the son of Shakra.

नलं नीलं हनूमन्तमन्यांश्च हरियूथपान् ॥

They also attended upon Nala, Nila, Hanuman, and the other Vanara chiefs.

Verse 34

ते तार्क्ष्यबलसंपन्नाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः । विचरन्तोऽर्दयन् दर्पात् सिंहव्याघ्रमहोरगान् ॥

All of them were endowed with the strength of Garuda and were skilled in warfare. As they wandered about, they subdued lions, tigers, and great serpents through their own might.

Verse 35

महाबलो महाबाहुर्वाली विपुलविक्रमः । जुगोप भुजवीर्येण ऋक्षगोपुच्छवानरान् ॥

The mighty and strong-armed Vali, possessed of immense valor, protected the bears, langurs, and Vanaras by the strength of his arms.

तैर्मेघबृन्दाचलकूटकल्पैः महाबलैर्वानरयूथपालैः । बभूव भूर्भीमशरीररूपैः समावृता रामसहायहेतोः ॥

The earth became filled with mighty Vanara army chiefs, whose enormous forms resembled masses of clouds and mountain peaks, and who had arisen for the purpose of assisting Rama.

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे सप्तदशः सर्गः ॥

Thus ends the seventeenth Sarga of Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, the first epic composed by Sage Valmiki.
