Verse 1

श्रुत्वा वस्तु समग्रम् तत् धर्मार्थ सहितम् हितम् | व्यक्तम् अन्वेषते भूयो यद्वृत्तम् तस्य धीमतः || १-३-१

Having heard that complete account, containing Dharma, Artha, and what is beneficial, the sage again sought in detail the events concerning that wise Rama.

Verse 2

उपस्पृश्य उदकम् सम्यक् मुनिः स्थित्वा कृताञ्जलिः | प्राचीन अग्रेषु दर्भेषु धर्मेण अन्वेषते गतिम् || १-३-२

Having properly touched the water and stood with folded hands, the sage sat upon sacred darbha grass with its tips facing east and, through his spiritual insight, sought the course of the events.

Verse 3

राम लक्ष्मण सीताभिः राज्ञा दशरथेन च | स भार्येण स राष्ट्रेण यत् प्राप्तम् तत्र तत्त्वतः || १-३-३

He perceived truthfully all that had happened concerning Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita; King Dasharatha and his wives; and Rama together with his kingdom.

Verse 4

हसितम् भाषितम् च एव गतिर् यातम् च चेष्टितम् | तत् सर्वम् धर्म वीर्येण यथावत् संप्रपश्यति || १-३-४

Their laughter, speech, movements, journeys, and actions—all these he clearly perceived exactly as they had occurred, through the power of his spiritual insight.

Verse 5

स्त्री तृतीयेन च तथा यत् प्राप्तम् चरता वने | सत्यसन्धेन रामेण तत् सर्वम् च अन्ववेक्षत || १-३-५

He also perceived everything that happened to truth-abiding Rama while he wandered in the forest with a woman as the third companion.

Verse 6

ततः पश्यति धर्मात्मा तत् सर्वम् योगम् आस्थितः | पुरा यत् तत्र निर्वृत्तम् पाणौ आमलकम् यथा || १-३-६

Then the righteous sage, established in yogic contemplation, saw everything that had happened before, as clearly as an amalaka fruit resting in the palm of his hand.

Verse 7

तत् सर्वम् तात्त्वतो दृष्ट्वा धर्मेण स महामतिः | अभिरामस्य रामस्य तत् सर्वम् कर्तुम् उद्यतः || १-३-७

Having perceived all these events in their true nature through spiritual insight, the highly intelligent sage prepared to compose the entire account of Rama, who delights all beings.

Verse 8

कामार्थ गुण संयुक्तम् धर्मार्थ गुण विस्तरम् | समुद्रम् इव रत्नाढ्यम् सर्व श्रुति मनोहरम् || १-३-८

The account was endowed with the qualities of desire and prosperity and contained an extensive exposition of the qualities and meaning of Dharma. Like an ocean rich in jewels, it was delightful to all who heard it.

Verse 9

स यथा कथितम् पूर्वम् नारदेन महात्मना | रघु वंशस्य चरितम् चकार भगवान् मुनिः || १-३-९

Thus, exactly as it had earlier been narrated by the great-souled Narada, the divine sage composed the history of the lineage of Raghu.

Verse 10

जन्म रामस्य सुमहद् वीर्यम् सर्वानुकूलताम् | लोकस्य प्रियताम् क्षान्तिम् सौम्यताम् सत्य शीलताम् || १-३-१०

He described Rama’s birth, his great valour, his graciousness toward all, his belovedness among the people, his patience, gentleness, and truthful character.

Verse 11

नाना चित्र कथाः च अन्याः विश्वामित्र सहायेन | जानक्याः च विवाहम् च धनुषः च विभेदनम् || १-३-११

He described many other remarkable events, Rama’s association with Vishvamitra, his marriage with Janaki, and the breaking of the bow.

Verse 12

राम राम विवादम् च गुणान् दाशरथेः तथा | तथा अभिषेकम् रामस्य कैकेय्याः दुष्ट भावताम् || १-३-१२

He described the encounter between Rama and Parashurama, the qualities of Rama, son of Dasharatha, the preparations for Rama’s consecration, and the evil intention of Kaikeyi.

Verse 13

विघातम् च अभिषेकस्य राघवस्य विवासनम् | राज्ञः शोकम् विलापम् च पर लोकस्य च आश्रयम् || १-३-१३

He described the interruption of Rama’s consecration, the exile of Raghava, the grief and lamentation of the king, and his departure to the other world.

Verse 14

प्रकृतीनाम् विषादम् च प्रकृतीनाम् विसर्जनम् | निषाद अधिप संवादम् सूतस्य च विसर्जनम् || १-३-१४

He described the sorrow of the citizens, their dismissal, the conversation with the chief of the Nishadas, and the dismissal of the charioteer.

Verse 15

गङ्गा तीरे प्रतिज्ञाम् च तथा भरद्वाज दर्शनम् | गङ्गा तरणम् च एव समागमम् च वनवासिनाम् || १-३-१५

He described the events at the bank of the Ganga, the meeting with Bharadwaja, the crossing of the Ganga, and the encounters with those dwelling in the forest.

Verse 16

चित्रकूट निवासम् च भरतस्य आगमम् तथा | प्रसादनम् च रामस्य पितुः च सलिल क्रियाम् || १-३-१६

He described the dwelling at Chitrakuta, the arrival of Bharata, Bharata’s efforts to persuade Rama, and the water offerings performed for Rama’s father.

Verse 17

पादुका अग्र्य अभिषेकम् च नन्दिग्राम निवासनम् | दण्डकारण्य गमनम् विराधस्य वधम् तथा || १-३-१७

He described the consecration of Rama’s sandals, Bharata’s residence at Nandigrama, Rama’s journey to the Dandaka forest, and the killing of Viradha.

Verse 18

दर्शनम् शरभङ्गस्य सुतीक्ष्णेन समागमम् | अनसूया समाख्यानम् च अङ्ग रागस्य अर्पणम् || १-३-१८

He described the meeting with Sharabhanga, the encounter with Sutikshna, the account concerning Anasuya, and the offering made to Sita.

Verse 19

दर्शनम् च अग्नि पुत्रस्य अगस्त्यस्य च दर्शनम् | शरासनस्य आदानम् च दिव्यस्य च शरासनम् || १-३-१९

He described the meeting with the son of Agni, the meeting with Agastya, and the receiving of the divine bow.

Verse 20

शूर्पणख्याः च संवादम् विरूप करणम् तथा | वधम् खर त्रिशिरसोः दूषणस्य च राक्षसः || १-३-२०

He described the conversation with Shurpanakha and her disfigurement, as well as the killing of Khara, Trishiras, and the Rakshasa Dushana.

Verse 21

ततः क्रोधम् रावणस्य मारीचस्य च वधम् | मायामृगस्य वधम् च वैदेह्याः हरणम् तथा || १-३-२१

Then he described the anger of Ravana, the killing of Maricha, the death of the magical deer, and the abduction of Vaidehi.

Verse 22

राघवस्य च विलापम् गृध्रराजस्य वधम् | दर्शनम् कबंधस्य पम्पायाः च अपि दर्शनम् || १-३-२२

He described Raghava’s lamentation, the death of the king of vultures, the encounter with Kabandha, and the sight of Lake Pampa.

Verse 23

शबरी दर्शनम् च एव हनुमद् दर्शनम् तथा | ऋष्यमूकस्य गमनम् सुग्रीवेण समागमम् || १-३-२३

He described the meeting with Shabari, the meeting with Hanuman, the journey to Rishyamuka, and the meeting with Sugriva.

Verse 24

प्रत्यय उत्पत्तिम् सुग्रीवे सख्य भाव समागमम् | वालि सुग्रीव युद्धम् च वालिनः च वधम् तथा || १-३-२४

He described the growth of Sugriva’s confidence, the establishment of friendship, the battle between Vali and Sugriva, and the killing of Vali.

Verse 25

सुग्रीव राज्यदानम् च ताराया विलापम् एव च | समयम् च प्रवासम् च वर्षा रात्रि निवासनम् || १-३-२५

He described the granting of the kingdom to Sugriva, Tara’s lamentation, and the period of waiting during the rainy season.

Verse 26

कोपम् राघव सिंहस्य बलानाम् च उपसंग्रहम् | दिशः प्रस्थापनम् च एव पृथिव्याः च निवेदनम् || १-३-२६

He described the anger of the lion-like Raghava, the assembling of the forces, the dispatch of the search parties in all directions, and the description of the earth.

Verse 27

अङ्गुलीयक दानम् च ऋक्षस्य बिल दर्शनम् | प्राय उपवेशनम् च एव सम्पातेः च अपि दर्शनम् || १-३-२७

He described the giving of the ring, the discovery of the cave, the decision to fast unto death, and the meeting with Sampati.

Verse 28

पर्वत आरोहणम् च एव सागरस्य च लङ्घनम् | समुद्र वचनात् च एव मैनाकस्य च दर्शनम् || १-३-२८

He described the ascent of the mountain, the crossing of the ocean, and the encounter with Mainaka.

Verse 29

सुरसा दर्शनम् च एव सिंहिका दर्शनम् तथा | लङ्का दर्शनम् च एव रात्रौ च नगर दर्शनम् || १-३-२९

He described the encounter with Surasa, the encounter with Simhika, the sight of Lanka, and the sight of the city at night.

Verse 30

रावण अन्तःपुर गमनम् अवरोधस्य दर्शनम् | पुष्पकस्य च दर्शनम् रावणस्य च दर्शनम् || १-३-३०

He described the entry into Ravana’s inner palace, the sight of its guarded chambers, the sight of the Pushpaka, and the sight of Ravana.

Verse 31

अशोक वनिका दर्शनम् सीता दर्शनम् एव च | अभिज्ञान प्रदानेन सीतायाः समाश्वासनम् || १-३-३१

He described the sight of the Ashoka grove, the sight of Sita, and her reassurance through the presentation of the token of recognition.

Verse 32

तोरणस्य च संहारम् राक्षसानाम् च वधम् | रावणस्य बलानाम् च विनाशम् च महाकपेः || १-३-३२

He described the destruction of the gateway, the killing of the Rakshasas, and the destruction of Ravana’s forces by the great Vanara.

Verse 33

ग्रहणम् वायुपुत्रस्य लङ्का दाहम् तथा एव च | प्रतिनिवृत्तिम् च रामस्य समागमम् च पुनः || १-३-३३

He described the capture of the son of the Wind, the burning of Lanka, his return, and his meeting with Rama once again.

Verse 34

समुद्रस्य च सन्तारम् नल सेतुम् च बन्धनम् | प्रतारम् च समुद्रस्य रात्रौ युद्धम् च राक्षसैः || १-३-३४

He described the crossing of the ocean, the construction of Nala’s bridge, the crossing to Lanka, and the night battles with the Rakshasas.

Verse 35

कुम्भकर्णस्य निधानम् मेघनाद वधम् तथा | रावणस्य च निधानम् सीतायाः अवरोधनम् || १-३-३५

He described the death of Kumbhakarna, the killing of Meghnada, the death of Ravana, and the recovery of Sita.

Verse 36

पुनः सीता समागमम् पुष्पक आरोहणम् तथा | अयोध्या आगमनम् च एव भरतेन समागमम् || १-३-३६

He described the reunion with Sita, the ascent into the Pushpaka, the return to Ayodhya, and the meeting with Bharata.

Verse 37

राज्य अभिषेकम् रामस्य भरतस्य विसर्जनम् | वानराणाम् विसर्जनम् राज्ये रामस्य च स्थितिम् || १-३-३७

He described Rama’s consecration as king, the return of Bharata, the departure of the Vanaras, and Rama’s establishment in the kingdom.

Verse 38

लोकस्य च सुखम् राज्ये वैदेह्याः च विसर्जनम् | तत् सर्वम् कथयामास मुनिः काव्ये महात्मना || १-३-३८

He described the happiness of the people during Rama’s reign and the later abandonment of Vaidehi. The great sage narrated all these events in his epic.

Verse 39

अनागतम् च यत् किंचित् रामस्य वसुधा तले | तत् चकार उत्तरे काव्ये वाल्मीकिः भगवान् ऋषिः || १-३-३९

Whatever events concerning Rama were yet to occur upon the earth, the divine sage Valmiki also composed in the later portion of the epic.
