Verse 1
एतत् श्रुत्वा रहः सूतो राजानम् इदम् अब्रवीत् | श्रूयताम् तत् पुरा वृत्तम् पुराणे च मया श्रुतम् || १-९-१
Having heard this, Sumantra, the charioteer, spoke to the king privately:
“Listen to an ancient account that I have heard from the Purana.”
Verse 2
ऋत्विग्भिः उपदिष्टोऽयम् पुरा वृत्तो मया श्रुतः | सनत्कुमारो भगवान् पूर्वम् कथितवान् कथाम् || १-९-२
ऋषीणाम् सन्निधौ राजन् तव पुत्राअगमम् प्रति |
“O King, I have heard this ancient account as it was related by the priests. The divine Sanatkumara formerly narrated this story in the presence of sages concerning the coming of your sons.”
Verse 3
काश्यपस्य च पुत्रोऽस्ति विभाण्डक इति श्रुतः || १-९-३
“It is heard that Kashyapa has a son named Vibhandaka.”
Verse 4
ऋष्यशृङ्ग इति ख्यातः तस्य पुत्रो भविष्यति | स वने नित्य संवृद्धो मुनिर् वनचरः सदा || १-९-४
“His son will be known as Rishyasringa. That sage will grow up continually in the forest and will always dwell there.”
Verse 5
न अन्यम् जानाति विप्रेन्द्रो नित्यम् पित्र अनुवर्तनात् | द्वैविध्यम् ब्रह्मचर्यस्य भविष्यति महात्मनः || १-९-५
“That foremost among Brahmanas will know no other people, always remaining with his father. The great soul will remain devoted to the observance of Brahmacharya.”
Verse 6
लोकेषु प्रथितम् राजन् विप्रैः च कथितम् सदा | तस्य एवम् वर्तमानस्य कालः समभिवर्तत || १-९-६
“O King, his conduct will become renowned throughout the world, and the Brahmanas will always speak of him. Thus time will pass while he continues in this manner.”
Verse 7
अग्निम् शुश्रूषमाणस्य पितरम् च यशस्विनम् | एतस्मिन् एव काले तु रोमपादः प्रतापवान् || १-९-७
आङ्गेषु प्रथितो राजा भविष्यति महाबलः |
“At that very time, while Rishyasringa is serving the sacred fire and his illustrious father, there will be a powerful and renowned king named Romapada in the land of Anga.”
Verse 8
तस्य व्यतिक्रमात् राज्ञो भविष्यति सुदारुणा || १-९-८
अनावृष्टिः सुघोरा वै सर्वलोक भयाअवहा |
“Because of that king’s transgression, there will arise a terrible drought, extremely severe and frightening to all living beings.”
Verse 9
अनावृष्ट्याम् तु वृत्तायाम् राजा दुःख समन्वितः || १-९-९
ब्राह्मणान् श्रुत संवृद्धान् च समानीय प्रवक्ष्यति |
“When the drought occurs, the king will become afflicted with sorrow and will summon Brahmanas learned in the scriptures and speak to them.”
Verse 10
भवन्तः श्रुत कर्माणो लोक चारित्र वेदिनः || १-९-१०
समादिशन्तु नियमम् प्रायश्चित्तम् यथा भवेत् |
“You are learned in sacred rites and know the conduct and traditions of the world. Tell me what observance and atonement should be performed.”
Verse 11
इति उक्ताः ते ततो राज्ञा सर्वे ब्राह्मण सत्तमाः || १-९-११
“Thus addressed by the king, all those foremost Brahmanas…”
Verse 12
वक्ष्यन्ति ते महीपालम् ब्राह्मणा वेद पारगाः | विभाण्डक सुतम् राजन् सर्व उपायैः इह आनय || १-९-१२
“The Brahmanas who have mastered the Vedas will say to that ruler:
‘O King, bring here by every possible means the son of Vibhandaka.’”
Verse 13
आनाय्य तु महीपाल ऋश्यशृङ्गम् सुसत्कृतम्। विभाण्डक सुतम् राजन् ब्राह्मणम् वेद पारगम्। प्रयच्छ कन्याम् शान्ताम् वै विधिना सुसमाहितः॥ १-९-१३
“O King, after bringing Rishyasringa, the son of Vibhandaka, a Brahmana learned in the Vedas, and honouring him properly, give your daughter Shanta to him in marriage according to the prescribed rites.”
Verse 14
तेषाम् तु वचनम् श्रुत्वा राजा चिन्ताम् प्रपत्स्यते | केन उपायेन वै शक्यम् इह आनेतुम् स वीर्यवान् || १-९-१४
“Having heard their words, the king will become thoughtful, wondering by what means that powerful and self-controlled sage can be brought here.”
Verse 15
ततो राजा विनिश्चित्य सह मंत्रिभिः आत्मवान् | पुरोहितम् अमात्याम् च प्रेषयिष्यति सत्कृतान् || १-९-१५
“Then the intelligent king, having deliberated with his ministers, will send his honoured priest and ministers.”
Verse 16
ते तु राज्ञो वचः श्रुत्वा व्यथिता विनत आननाः | न गच्छेम ऋषेः भीता अनुनेष्यन्ति तम् नृपम् || १-९-१६
“Having heard the king’s command, they will become frightened and lower their faces. Afraid of the sage, they will say that they cannot go and will appeal to the king.”
Verse 17
वक्ष्ष्यन्ति चिंतयित्वा ते तस्य उपायाम् च तान् क्षमान् | आनेष्यामो वयम् विप्रम् न च दोषो भविष्यति || १-९-१७
“After considering the matter, they will find a means of bringing the Brahmana and say:
‘We shall bring the sage here, and no fault will arise from it.’”
Verse 18
एवम् अङ्गाधिपेन एव गणिकाभिः ऋषेः सुतः | आनीतोऽवर्षयत् देव शान्ता च अस्मै प्रदीयते || १-९-१८
“Thus, by the king of Anga and by courtesans, the son of the sage will be brought there. Then the deity will cause the rains to fall, and Shanta will also be given to him.”
Verse 19
ऋष्यशृङ्गः तु जामाता पुत्रान् तव विधास्यति | सनत्कुमार कथितम् एतावत् व्याहृतम् मया || १-९-१९
“Rishyasringa, having become your son-in-law, will bring about the birth of sons for you. This is what Sanatkumara said, and this entire account has now been narrated by me.”
Verse 20
अथ हृष्टो दशरथः सुमंत्रम् प्रत्यभाषत | यथा ऋष्यशृङ्गः तु आनीतो येन उपायेन स उच्चताम् || १-९-२०
Then the delighted Dasharatha spoke to Sumantra:
“Tell me in detail by what means Rishyasringa was brought.”
