Translation
This does not trouble him: "Why did I not do good?" or "Why did I do evil?" He who knows this rises above both (good and evil) — this indeed is the essence of this Upanishad.

Bhrigu Valli Shloka 22
Translation
Bhrigu, son of Varuna, approached his father and said, "Lord, teach me Brahman." Varuna told him: food, breath, eye, ear, mind, and speech (are the means to know it). He further said: "That from which these beings are born, that by which, once born, they live, and that into which they depart and merge — seek to know that. That is Brahman." Bhrigu performed austerity.
Conversation
Bhrigu Valli Shloka 23
Translation
He realized that food is Brahman — for from food indeed all beings are born, by food, once born, they live, and into food they depart and merge. Having understood this, he again approached his father Varuna: "Lord, teach me further about Brahman." Varuna said: "Seek to know Brahman through austerity; austerity is Brahman." Bhrigu performed austerity.

Translation
He realized that breath (prana) is Brahman — for from breath all beings are born, by breath they live, and into breath they depart and merge. Having understood this, he again approached Varuna for further teaching. Varuna again said: "Seek to know Brahman through austerity." Bhrigu performed austerity.

Bhrigu Valli Shloka 25
Translation
He realized that mind is Brahman — for from mind all beings are born, by mind they live, and into mind they depart and merge. Having understood this, he again approached Varuna. Varuna again directed him: "Seek to know Brahman through austerity." Bhrigu performed austerity.
Conversation
Bhrigu Valli Shloka 26
Translation
He realized that intellect/knowledge (vijnana) is Brahman — for from intellect all beings are born, by intellect they live, and into intellect they depart and merge. Having understood this, he again approached Varuna. Varuna once more said: "Seek to know Brahman through austerity." Bhrigu performed austerity.
Conversation
Bhrigu Valli Shloka 27
Translation
Finally he realized that bliss (ananda) is Brahman — for from bliss all beings are born, by bliss they live, and into bliss they depart and merge. This is the knowledge that Bhrigu received from his father Varuna, established in the highest heaven. He who knows this becomes established; he becomes possessed of food and an eater of food; he becomes great in offspring, cattle, and the radiance of holiness, and great in fame.
Conversation
Bhrigu Valli Shloka 28
Translation
One should not disrespect food — this is the vow. Breath indeed is food, and the body is the eater of food. The body rests on breath, and breath rests on the body; thus food rests upon food. He who knows this — that food rests upon food — becomes established, becomes possessed of food, great in offspring, cattle, and holiness, and great in fame.
Conversation
Bhrigu Valli Shloka 29
Translation
One should not turn away food — this is the vow. Water indeed is food, and light (fire) is the eater of food. Light rests on water, and water rests on light; thus food rests upon food. He who knows this becomes established, becomes possessed of food, great in offspring, cattle, and holiness, and great in fame.
Conversation
Bhrigu Valli Shloka 30
Translation
One should produce food in abundance — this is the vow. Earth indeed is food, and space (akasha) is the eater of food. Space rests on earth, and earth rests in space; thus food rests upon food. He who knows this becomes established, becomes possessed of food, great in offspring, cattle, and holiness, and great in fame.
Conversation
Bhrigu Valli Shloka 31
Translation
One should not turn away any guest seeking shelter — this is the vow. Therefore, by whatever means, one should obtain abundant food; food, they say, is (thus) well-earned for him. This becomes the famous final declaration: "I am food, I am food, I am food. I am the eater of food, the eater of food, the eater of food. I am the maker of verses, the maker of verses, the maker of verses. I am the firstborn of the cosmic order, prior to the gods, at the centre of immortality. Whoever gives me away, he alone preserves me thus. I, who am food, eat the eater of food. I have overcome the whole universe, I am radiant like the sun." He who knows this (attains liberation). This indeed is the Upanishad.
