Shloka 7:1

ॐ

श्रीभगवानुवाच ।
मय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ योगं युञ्जन्मदाश्रयः ।
असंशयं समग्रं मां यथा ज्ञास्यसि तच्छृणु ॥ ७:१ ॥

shri bhagavan uvacha
mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan mad-ashrayah
asamshayam samagram mam yatha jnasyasi tac chrinu

Translation

The Blessed Lord said: O Partha, listen to how, with your mind attached to Me and taking refuge in Me while practicing yoga, you shall know Me completely and without doubt.

Shloka 7:2

ॐ

ज्ञानं तेऽहं सविज्ञानमिदं वक्ष्याम्यशेषतः ।
यज्ज्ञात्वा नेह भूयोऽन्यज्ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते ॥ ७:२ ॥

jnanam te 'ham sa-vijnanam idam vakshyamy asheshatah
yaj jnatva neha bhuyo 'nyaj jnatavyam avashishyate

Translation

I shall declare to you this knowledge together with realization in full, knowing which nothing further remains to be known in this world.

Shloka 7:3

ॐ

मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये ।
यततामपि सिद्धानां कश्चिन्मां वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ॥ ७:३ ॥

manushyanam sahasreshu kashchid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam kashchin mam vetti tattvatah

Translation

Among thousands of people, scarcely one strives for perfection, and among those who strive and attain perfection, hardly one truly knows Me in reality.

Shloka 7:4

ॐ

भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च ।
अहंकार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ॥ ७:४ ॥

bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh kham mano buddhir eva cha
ahankara itiyam me bhinna prakritir ashtadha

Translation

Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, and ego—these eight constitute My separated material nature.

Shloka 7:5

ॐ

अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् ।
जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥ ७:५ ॥

apareyam itas tv anyam prakritim viddhi me param
jiva-bhutam maha-baho yayedam dharyate jagat

Translation

But know My other, higher nature, O mighty-armed one, consisting of the living beings by whom this universe is sustained.

Shloka 7:6

ॐ

एतद्योनीनि भूतानि सर्वाणीत्युपधारय ।
अहं कृत्स्नस्य जगतः प्रभवः प्रलयस्तथा ॥ ७:६ ॥

etad-yonini bhutani sarvanity upadharaya
aham kritsnasya jagatah prabhavah pralayas tatha

Translation

Understand that all beings arise from these two natures. I am the origin as well as the dissolution of the entire universe.

Shloka 7:7

ॐ

मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय ।
मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥ ७:७ ॥

mattah parataram nanyat kinchid asti dhananjaya
mayi sarvam idam protam sutre mani-gana iva

Translation

There is nothing whatsoever higher than Me, O Dhananjaya. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.

ॐ

रसोऽहमप्सु कौन्तेय प्रभास्मि शशिसूर्ययोः ।
प्रणवः सर्ववेदेषु शब्दः खे पौरुषं नृषु ॥ ७:८ ॥

raso 'ham apsu kaunteya prabhasmi shashi-suryayoh
pranavah sarva-vedeshu shabdah khe paurusham nrishu

Translation

O Kaunteya, I am the taste in water, the radiance in the moon and the sun, the sacred syllable Om in all the Vedas, the sound in space, and the ability in human beings.

ॐ

पुण्यो गन्धः पृथिव्यां च तेजश्चास्मि विभावसौ ।
जीवनं सर्वभूतेषु तपश्चास्मि तपस्विषु ॥ ७:९ ॥

punyo gandhah prithivyam cha tejas chasmi vibhavasau
jivanam sarva-bhuteshu tapas chasmi tapasvishu

Translation

I am the pure fragrance in the earth, the brilliance in fire, the life in all beings, and the austerity of ascetics.

Shloka 7:10

ॐ

बीजं मां सर्वभूतानां विद्धि पार्थ सनातनम् ।
बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतामस्मि तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम् ॥ ७:१० ॥

buddhir buddhimatam asmi tejas tejasvinam aham
bijam mam sarva-bhutanam viddhi partha sanatanam

Translation

O Partha, know Me to be the eternal seed of all beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent and the splendor of the splendid.

Shloka 7:11

ॐ

बलं बलवतां चाहं कामरागविवर्जितम् ।
धर्माविरुद्धो भूतेषु कामोऽस्मि भरतर्षभ ॥ ७:११ ॥

balam balavatam chaham kama-raga-vivarjitam
dharmaviruddho bhuteshu kamo 'smi bharatarshabha

Translation

I am the strength of the strong, free from desire and attachment. O best of the Bharatas, I am desire that is not opposed to righteousness.

Shloka 7:12

ॐ

ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास्तामसाश्च ये ।
मत्त एवेति तान्विद्धि न त्वहं तेषु ते मयि ॥ ७:१२ ॥

ye chaiva sattvika bhava rajasas tamasas cha ye
matta eveti tan viddhi na tv aham teshu te mayi

Translation

Know that all states of being—whether born of goodness, passion, or ignorance—arise from Me alone. Yet I am not confined in them; they exist in Me.

Shloka 7:13

ॐ

त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभिः सर्वमिदं जगत् ।
मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्यः परमव्ययम् ॥ ७:१३ ॥

tribhir guna-mayair bhavair ebhih sarvam idam jagat
mohitam nabhijanati mam ebhyah param avyayam

Translation

Deluded by these three qualities of material nature, the whole world fails to recognize Me, who am beyond them and imperishable.

Shloka 7:14

ॐ

दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया ।
मामेव ye प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते ॥ ७:१४ ॥

daivi hy esha guna-mayi mama maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te

Translation

This divine illusion of Mine, made of the three qualities of nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who take refuge in Me alone cross beyond this illusion.

Shloka 7:15

ॐ

न मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढाः प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमाः ।
माययापहृतज्ञाना आसुरं भावमाश्रिताः ॥ ७:१५ ॥

na mam dushkritino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah
mayayapahrita-jnana asuram bhavam ashritah

Translation

The evildoers, the deluded, the lowest among men, whose knowledge has been stolen by illusion and who possess a demonic nature, do not seek refuge in Me.

Shloka 7:16

ॐ

चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां जनाः सुकृतिनोऽर्जुन ।
आर्तो जिज्ञासुरर्थार्थी ज्ञानी च भरतर्षभ ॥ ७:१६ ॥

chatur-vidha bhajante mam janah sukritino 'rjuna
arto jijnasur artharthi jnani cha bharatarshabha

Translation

Four kinds of virtuous people worship Me, O Arjuna—the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise.

Shloka 7:17

ॐ

तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त एकभक्तिर्विशिष्यते ।
प्रियो हि ज्ञानिनोऽत्यर्थमहं स च मम प्रियः ॥ ७:१७ ॥

tesham jnani nitya-yukta eka-bhaktir vishishyate
priyo hi jnanino 'tyartham aham sa cha mama priyah

Translation

Among them, the wise one, ever steadfast and devoted exclusively to Me, is the highest. I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and the wise are dear to Me.

Shloka 7:18

ॐ

उदाराः सर्व एवैते ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम् ।
आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा मामेवानुत्तमां गतिम् ॥ ७:१८ ॥

udarah sarva evaite jnani tv atmaiva me matam
asthitah sa hi yuktatma mam evanuttamam gatim

Translation

All these devotees are indeed noble, but I regard the wise as My very own self, for with mind steadfast, they are established in Me alone as the supreme goal.

Shloka 7:19

ॐ

बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते ।
वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः ॥ ७:१९ ॥

bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate
vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma su-durlabhah

Translation

After many births, the person of wisdom surrenders unto Me, realizing that Vasudevah is everything. Such a great soul is exceedingly rare.

Shloka 7:20

ॐ

कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञानाः प्रपद्यन्तेऽन्यदेवताः ।
तं तं नियममास्थाय प्रकृत्या नियताः स्वया ॥ ७:२० ॥

kamais tais tair hrita-jnanah prapadyante 'nya-devatah
tam tam niyamam asthaya prakritya niyatah svaya

Translation

Those whose wisdom has been carried away by various desires worship other deities, following particular rites according to their own nature.

Shloka 7:21

ॐ

यो यो यां यां तनुं भक्तः श्रद्धयार्चितुमिच्छति ।
तस्य तस्याचलां श्रद्धां तामेव विदधाम्यहम् ॥ ७:२१ ॥

yo yo yam yam tanum bhaktah shraddhayarchitum icchati
tasya tasyachalam shraddham tam eva vidadhamy aham

Translation

Whatever form a devotee desires to worship with faith, I make that very faith steady and unwavering.

Shloka 7:22

ॐ

स तया श्रद्धया युक्तस्तस्याराधनमीहते ।
लभते च ततः कामान्मयैव विहितान्हि तान् ॥ ७:२२ ॥

sa taya shraddhaya yuktas tasyaradhanam ihate
labhate cha tatah kaman mayaiva vihitan hi tan

Translation

Endowed with that faith, the devotee worships that deity and obtains the desired objects, though they are granted by Me alone.

Shloka 7:23

ॐ

अन्तवत्तु फलं तेषां तद्भवत्यल्पमेधसाम् ।
देवान्देवयजो यान्ति मद्भक्ता यान्ति मामपि ॥ ७:२३ ॥

antavat tu phalam tesham tad bhavaty alpa-medhasam
devan deva-yajo yanti mad-bhakta yanti mam api

Translation

But the fruit gained by those of limited understanding is temporary. Worshippers of the gods go to the gods, whereas My devotees come to Me.

Shloka 7:24

ॐ

अव्यक्तं व्यक्तिमापन्नं मन्यन्ते मामबुद्धयः ।
परं भावमजानन्तो ममाव्ययमनुत्तमम् ॥ ७:२४ ॥

avyaktam vyaktim apannam manyante mam abuddhayah
param bhavam ajananto mamavyayam anuttamam

Translation

The unintelligent think that I, the Unmanifest, have now assumed a manifest form. They do not know My supreme, eternal, and unsurpassed nature.

Shloka 7:25

ॐ

नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य योगमायासमावृतः ।
मूढोऽयं नाभिजानाति लोको मामजमव्ययम् ॥ ७:२५ ॥

naham prakashah sarvasya yoga-maya-samavritah
mudho 'yam nabhijanati loko mam ajam avyayam

Translation

Veiled by My divine power (Yoga-Maya), I am not manifest to everyone. This deluded world does not know Me as the unborn and imperishable Lord.

Shloka 7:26

ॐ

वेदाहं समतीतानि वर्तमानानि चार्जुन ।
भविष्याणि च भूतानि मां तु वेद न कश्चन ॥ ७:२६ ॥

vedaham samatitani vartamanani charjuna
bhavishyani cha bhutani mam tu veda na kashchana

Translation

O Arjuna, I know all beings of the past, present, and future, but no one truly knows Me.

Shloka 7:27

ॐ

इच्छाद्वेषसमुत्थेन द्वन्द्वमोहेन भारत ।
सर्वभूतानि सम्मोहं सर्गे यान्ति परन्तप ॥ ७:२७ ॥

iccha-dvesha-samutthena dvandva-mohena bharata
sarva-bhutani sammoham sarge yanti parantapa

Translation

O Bharata, O conqueror of foes, all beings are born into delusion, overcome by the confusion arising from desire and aversion.

ॐ

येषां त्वन्तगतं पापं जनानां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।
ते द्वन्द्वमोहनिर्मुक्ता भजन्ते मां दृढव्रताः ॥ ७:२८ ॥

yesham tv anta-gatam papam jananam punya-karmanam
te dvandva-moha-nirmukta bhajante mam dridha-vratah

Translation

But those whose sins have been destroyed through righteous deeds, freed from the delusion of dualities, worship Me with firm resolve.

Shloka 7:29

ॐ

जरामरणमोक्षाय मामाश्रित्य यतन्ति ये ।
ते ब्रह्म तद्विदुः कृत्स्नमध्यात्मं कर्म चाखिलम् ॥ ७:२९ ॥

jara-marana-mokshaya mam ashritya yatanti ye
te brahma tad viduh kritsnam adhyatmam karma chakhilam

Translation

Those who strive for freedom from old age and death by taking refuge in Me come to know Brahman, the whole of spiritual knowledge, and the entirety of karma.

ॐ

साधिभूताधिदैवं मां साधियज्ञं च ये विदुः ।
प्रयाणकालेऽपि च मां ते विदुर्युक्तचेतसः ॥ ७:३० ॥

sadhibhutadhidaivam mam sadhiyajnam cha ye viduh
prayana-kale 'pi cha mam te vidur yukta-chetasah

Translation

Those who know Me together with Adhibhuta, Adhidaiva, and Adhiyajna, and whose minds are united with Me, know Me even at the time of death.
